Drugs That Help Tinnitus

Even though there is an estimated 52 million people who suffer from tinnitus in the US alone, it is difficult to come by drugs that help tinnitus.  Once upon a time, tinnitus was thought of a psychological condition; however, it is looked at differently now.  Banish Tinnitus

Modern medicine has been able to prove methods that help, such as prescription therapy, sound therapy, and surgery in extreme conditions.  Though there are a few different methods to fight tinnitus, we will look specifically at some drugs that help tinnitus in this article in addition to drugs that can also cause it.

Though there isn’t one set medication know to cure tinnitus, there are many drugs that help tinnitus symptoms reduce.  Some of the commonly prescribed medications include ant-depressants, antihistamines, and heart medications.

You may be able to find some home remedies in other articles on this site that help with tinnitus, but here some lists of prescription medications:

Anti-depressants

  • Xanax
  • Prozac
  • Cymbalta
  • Paxil
  • Zoloft

Antihistamines

  • Benadryl
  • Allegra
  • Claritin
  • Dramamine

You may we wondering why anti-depressants and antihistamines are drugs that help tinnitus.  I’ll give a brief explanation why.  In past years, it was believed that depression is what caused tinnitus, but it is completely opposite.  Tinnitus causes depression.  The anti-depressants aren’t prescribed to take away tinnitus but to help with its effects.

Antihistamines, on the other hand, are drugs that help tinnitus in the prevention area.  Allergies can cause irritation to the surrounding tissues.  Inflammations or infections can be part of the cause of tinnitus.

Non-prescription homeopathic remedies are drugs that help tinnitus too.  Ginkgo Biloba, Wild Hyssop, Wild Oats, and Rosemary all help the nervous system.   These supplements can help enhance neurotransmission.  One of the benefits of these supplements is the availability factor.  You don’t have to wait for a prescription to purchase these.  You still may want to discuss them with your doctor to make sure they don’t interfere with any present prescription use.
There are also some drugs that don’t help tinnitus, they can actually cause it.  There are many drugs that fall into this category, so I will only name some of the most common ones.

The drugs that can cause tinnitus include:

  • Alka-Seltzer (from chronic use)
  • Aspirin
  • Bactrim
  • Celebrex
  • Viagra

It is important to realize that these solutions aren’t permanent methods of curing tinnitus.  However, these drugs that help tinnitus could be ways to manage some of the symptoms.  Some of these solutions take time, so be patient as you try out new ways to overcome tinnitus symptoms.
